Monday made it possible for that to happen and even passed as Norway hit five million people.

Despite the enormous wealth of the country engineered by oil deposits here and there in the North sea and a huge oil fund in which the government has starch much of its oil wealth in various funds, the population of the country has been growing creepily. In fact, if not of a slightly increased immigration that had covered for the historic emigration, the population would have continued to remain the same – low.
Despite extensive emigration of the Norwegians to the USA, 1 million to be specific in the last 100 years, Norwegian society had experienced an economic development that had made it possible to keep the some emigrants here. Had all the other Norwegian scattered here and there stayed in Norway, the population would have reached a figure today of somewhere between 7 and 8 million instead of 5 million, according to Prof. Stale Dyrvik at the University of Bergen.
Besides the emigration to America, it is likely pest attacks such as the Black Death that have had the greatest impact on population trends in Norway.
It is clear that increase immigration has contributed to the population growth as Norway gradually become a pluralise society.
