More deadly violence against foreign-born women in Sweden as authorities fear to enforce Swedish laws for fear of racial bias accusations

Monday, 27 May 2013

Swedish women who have a foreign background are exposed to more violence than Swedish-born women are, in general terms. The type of violence inflicted on foreign-born women is also heavier with fatal outcomes.

This comes from a new research presented via a thesis from Lund University.
Among women who have been killed or died as a result of violent injuries, almost three times more such deaths were recorded among women with foreign-born background. This begs the question the roles of law related to protecting the vulnerable in a society such as Sweden.violence-againt-women-in-sweden
"We have especially seen that low household income, social isolation, and even low-equality from the country they come from contribute to this record. There is  also violent confrontation among Swedish-born women - but it is more often among those with immigrant background that is very lethal," says Cecilia Fernbrant  author of the PhD thesis to Swedish television.
One of the main factors leading to this heavy violence among women for example women from Iraq, has to do with a challenges faced by the man due to change in gender role. This is a big test for those men who find it hard to accept the new liberalism women have found in a woman - friendly environment in Sweden
This challenges the traditional gender role found in their home countries, which in Sweden women are more empowered.
Other forms of violence identified in the study includes psychological violence, for those who are afraid that the law might catch-up with them if any sign of physical violence is spotted on the women.
18,000 people were sampled in the study, which was based on data from four sources, - the Public Health Survey in Skåne and the Swedish Cause of Death Register. In addition, in depth interviews were made with women born in Iraq and a questionnaire to women born in Thailand.
