Mental health ravages children whose parents have immigrants background than those of Swedish

Wednesday, 26 December 2012
Children of foreign birth parents are at greater risk of ill health, than those who parent where comfortably born in Sweden, a study from a dissertation from Mid Sweden University (Mittuniversitetet) show.

Heidi Carlerby, the author of the study has studied children in grades 5, 7 and 9, about their health care and the forces behind the way the feel, health-wise  and have come to the conclusion about the health divide in Sweden based on where people come from, according to a report on radio Sweden.

"I looked at the psychosomatic symptoms, such as abdominal pain, back pain, irritation, dizziness, trouble sleeping, and so on. A physical symptoms that might have a psychosocial basis," she said to radio sweden.

When she overlapped the risk factors, she saw that children with foreign-born parents are at greater risk of ill health. Generally, girls are more vulnerable than boys and girls with two foreign-born parents stand as the biggest risk group.

The author, Heidi Carlerby suggested that the reason for this sex dichotomy could be due to the natural "design of a man and woman." But also that the expectations for girls might be higher than what the expectations are for boys. "Girls could be taking more responsibilities both at school and at home," said Heidi Carlerby.

Another important factor is the economic stance of the children with immigrant parents. "Three out of ten children with foreign-born parents had low tangible assets, compared with less than one in ten among children of Swedish-born parents. It says something about the foreign-born status in the society at large," said Heidi Carlerby.

It is customary to talk about the place we all have as social position in society. It is surely more difficult to enter the labour market when you are of a certain foreign origin, which affects the economy of those people, according to Heidi Carlerby.
The expectation is that such research could expose more the plight of such children and their health related problems and seek way to make them better at school.

"These young people contributes to the Swedish society. We would be more than able to exploit and take advantage of young people's capacities and competencies," says Heidi Carlerby.

This is not the first time such a study has come up. Studies after studies have shown the strong divide in the Swedish social structure which have clearly marked the "them" and "us". The fact that the Swedish labour market is a no go zone for certain types of immigrants,  such as those with the wrong skin colour (black or dark) or those who come from some types of cultures where they dress differently and, or follow a certain type of religion, pessimists believe that nothing will ever change.

One strong evidence of this is the fact that many employers have been found to show more support to the policies of the far rights party, Sweden Democrats.
