Many Swedish household without power as extreme weather intensifies

Wednesday, 26 December 2012
Extreme winter weather has battered some parts of Sweden and as at the time of this posting, thousands of Vattenfall's customers are currently without power in several parts of the country.

Overall, these are about 1 200 households that are managing without electricity since early this morning of Boxing Day. Foremost affected are customers in Uppsala, Östergötland and Dalarna. Helena Kortered, Communications spokesperson at Vattenfall, says that they hope power will return in the morning.

At nine o'clock on Wednesday morning, about 400 households stood without power in the county, and as many in Östergötland. In Dalarna almost 350 household lacked electricity.

The reason is the heavy wet snow that settles on the branches of trees that are broken off and fallen onto power lines. Customers were also hit on Christmas Day with power outages in Uppsala County and in Värmdö but in most cases they have seen their power restored.

It is not clear how soon the 1200 households that are now without power again could see their powers restored.
Sweden has been battered seriously with blizzards during the Christmas holidays. Strong winds and fresh snow makes it possible for avalanche in the Swedish mountains and such risks has increased in recent days.
In places such as Bydalen and Tänndalen, the  risk of avalanche has been classified as high and placed on three on the five-point scale. This means that avalanches triggered by people are likely and that natural avalanches are possible.
Avalanche danger is considered high even in Åre, which is classified as a two. In Vemdalen and Ramundberget avalanche danger are classified as one on the same scale.
