Increased youth suicides in Sweden especially those with disability
Thursday, 16 May 2013
Suicides and
serious suicide attempts among young people in Sweden is on the
increase. Most of those more vulnerable are young people and
particularly those with disabilities and reduced working capacity.
This comes from a report from Kristina Alexandersson, professor of
social insurance, made to the Swedish Parliamentary Social Insurance
Commission.
"This is indeed a terrible situation. Suicide affects very many people
around," said Kristina Alexandersson, in an interview with radio Sweden
and adds "Young adults with low activity - risk of suicide attempts and
suicide in reality is on the rise."
Young people are those who are taking their lives more around the
country. Suicides decrease in the other age groups within the country's
population structure. Kristina Alexandersson's report shows that young
people with disabilities and reduced working capacity are those hard
hit and then followed by those who receive activity support
compensation from the government or what could be called jobs seekers
allowances.
The result is frightening. During the measurement period, that is
between 1995 and 2010 more than doubled the number of young people were
taking early retirement - from work, between 5000 and 12000. That same
time quadrupled the number of serious suicide attempts from 115 to 460.
The number who managed to take their lives increased from 10 to 45,
among those aged 19-23 year olds are those who received disability
allowance.
Both healthcare and Social insurance officials known that these young
people with activity support are particularly vulnerable to both
suicide and serious suicide attempts as are aware that their numbers
have increased so much. Suicide and suicide attempts is a marker of
serious mental illness, according to Professor Kristina Alexandersson.
Though economic issue clearly stood out it was found in the report that increase youth joblessness and particularly increased unemployment amount the disable community could be the trigger of the mental breakdown and thus suicide risk.
