Increased internet fraud in Sweden- danger on the cyber space

Thursday, 11 July 2013
Until June this year, Swedish police received over 10, 000 complaints of internet fraud . This is thus being described as an explosion in internet fraud coming from different structure and colours from the internet.

According to the latest data from Swedish crime prevention council, (BRÅ) the increase has reached 37 percent compared with the same period last year.

This year, complaints have increased by more than a third and the police receive 69 new entries every day. One explanation is that organized crime in the country has properly established itself on the internet, writes the Swedish daily Dagens Nyheter

According to the paper, today, the old Nigeria letters have been replaced by more advanced versions where it is often difficult to say for certain what is fake and what is real online. The new methods have led to the number of victims of fraud soaring.

On the whole internet crimes and fraud are the fastest growing type of crime in the country.

In the first five months of this year, police received 10,355 entries in internet related fraud, according to statistics from Brå. This is an increase of 37 percent from the same period last year.

Much of the fraud falls within the so-called "social engineering". An approach based on the user being tricked into handing over their own personal or bank account information in the belief that the impostor for example is a company that you are a customer of or a friend who needs a loan. Using the information the offender may then empty your account or steal the victim's identity.

Anonymity available on the Internet makes it difficult for the police to investigate this type of crime. Last year they managed to just tie an offender to 15 percent of the crimes.
