Hidden behind the hype of the wonders of Sweden - Scores of families go without money for food

Tuesday, 20 November 2012
More and more families in Stockholm are turning to the charity, City Mission youth services for assistance to get help with buying food.

This comes as the glamour of the Swedish capital may present itself as an environment of plenty and a Swedish welfare system described as "generous" which would supposed its population would be properly fed, cloths and housed.

Last year, just 64 families needed emergency food money but this year that number is tipped to rise above 100, writes City Mission said in a statement.

"Many families wait until the very end. Fridge is empty when they come. There are no margins," writes City Mission social worker, Pia Axelsson.

The pressure means that more families will have to wait longer as the association meet more families who "have no safety net and do not have anywhere to go."
