Dozens of fires light up the dark Stockholm Suburbs as more youths descend on the streets for a third night of carnage

Wednesday, 22 May 2013

Masked young people with lighter fluid have again last night fired up cars and threw rocks at police in the Swedish capital, marking the third night in a row when some young people descended on the capital to vent their anger, or continued to create disorder.
For the third night in a row, there were riots in the suburbs around Stockholm.
Cars were set alight in several places, and stone-throwing youths attacked a police station in Jakobsberg, located about 15 miles northwest of the central of the city.

Windows were shattered before large police forces struck ring around the building.
Five cars have gone up in flames in Jakobsbergsgatan, where young men smashed windows and shop signs.
There are also reports of fires in the neighbourhoods of Rinkeby, Skarpnäck, Norsborg, Kista and Tensta, Sollentuna, Norsborg Vårberg, Skarpnack, Skärholmen Fittja and Bredäng. In Fittja southwest of Stockholm city centre masked men set fire to a container and cars in a parking lot.
The cause of the riots is still directed to an event in Husby last week, where police shot and killed a 69-year-old man with an immigrant background who brandished a machete.

Commentators in Sweden, however, indicates that the problems are deeper than that, and the turmoil is a manifestation of social decay and lack of education, opportunities as young people in these communities are happy to make their plights known with such actions.
Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt said Tuesday afternoon that there are a group of young men who believe that "one can and should change society with violence."
"Let's be clear: This is not okay. We cannot let violence rule," said the Reinfeldt.
Large police forces were deployed in Husby, where at least four people were arrested on Tuesday. Between 50 and 100 young people took part in street battles with the police since the unrest began on Sunday night.

Another four people were arrested on  Tuesday night in Husby, police said. They are suspected of having started a fire in the local arts and crafts association premises at Husby Gård. Three of them were caught with lighter fluid on them.
Husby has about 12,000 inhabitants and it is estimated that 80 percent of them have foreign backgrounds.
