4.4 magnitude earthquake in Sweden

An earthquake in the sea between Sweden and Denmark brought people in southwest Sweden to an early wake up this morning. The quake, with magnitude 4.4, was centred around Halmstad.

"We woke up at five this morning as the whole house shook. The walls creaked. We have not had time to check if there have been some cracks elsewhere," says Anne Mathias and Elm in Angelholm  to Swedish television.

U.S. Geological authority USGS stated on his site that the quake occurred 5,1 mil south of Falkenberg and 6.0 mil north of Höganäs, 6.1 mil south of Halmstad and 6.1 mil south-southwest of Varberg.

The quake was reported to be at a depth of 5.8 km, but that figure was unsure of the site.
Police in Halmstad received about 30 calls immediately after the quake.
The quake, according to police, was felt from Angelholm and up to Varberg - east of Skåne, Hässleholm, Kristianstad - people felt the quake and wondered what had happened.

The Earthquake occurred substantially along the zones at the surface where the so -called continental plates intersect. The plates moving at a speed of up to twelve centimetres per year.

Sometimes there is the growth of considerable energy in a plate or between two plates. When the pressure becomes higher than the bedrock is suddenly becomes capable of suddenly breaking the structure of the rock. The energy that was stored in the rock is released when in the form of an earthquake.

Earthquake in Sweden can also be caused by the rock slowly lifted up after having been depressed during the last ice age.
