Swedish petrol stations discriminate against Roma

Wednesday, 03 October 2012
Gas stations around Sweden discriminate against Roma news reports reveal on Wednesday.

According to radio Sweden, people dressed in traditional Roma clothing have been trying to rent a car at 65 petrol stations around Sweden. A third of the stations did not hire out cars to Roma.

Where there were no Roma, reporters went in with the same request shortly thereafter. In 22 of the stations, reporters were able to rent a car, even though the staff had indicated to the Roma just half an hour to an hour earlier said there where no  cars to be leased. Many of the test subjects were Finnish Roma.
Sweden radio chose to examine Statoil and OKQ8, because these are the main stations in Sweden, which rent cars in-house. In addition, Preem petrol stations were tested, but neither had it rented out to Roma subjects.

A former Statoil employee radio Sweden spoke to had spoken to said that employees had received directive to behave this way. By contrast, managers at Statoil and OKQ8 chains identified that it violates their policy.

Ola Enquist, director of the Swedish Statoil's full-service stations, with a place in the company's management team, and Goran Lindblå, Executive Chairman at OKQ8 says that discrimination should not occur at their petrol stations.

However, with full documentation of the evidence, these companies would never have accepted that they discriminate or that discrimination was a culture in their organisations.
