Confidence booster to the British anti EU movement: A third of Danes wants to leave the EU as more of Europe expand scepticism

Thursday, 06 June 2013
The support is still small for the Danish context but it is getting significant when the Danes are questioned about their support for the EU. The Danish population, according to a new poll from Gallup are beginning to wonder away from the lofty European Union project.

The Opinion poll shows that there is a gap between those who want to stay and those who want to leave the European project.
After a potent EU political year with Danish EU rebate, financial crisis, and Cyprus close to bankruptcy, 39 percent of the Danes polled are in favour of leaving the Union, while 45 percent of Danes would like to stay in it.

Similar polls were also conducted in France, Germany, Holland, Poland and the UK and here the majority of the respondents said that the EU is generally heading towards the wrong direction.

In Denmark 30 percent of respondents considered that things are moving in the right direction, while 40 percent believe that the EU is disharmonious.

Although Danes are among the most sceptical in the EU context, the British are not surprisingly, the most sceptical when 55 percent want to leave the Union.

39 percent of Dutch people will also leave the EU, while 34 percent of French people want the same thing.

During the last elections to the European Parliament in Denamrk, turnout was the lowest ever, and although it is still early to predict, the study shows that there is general support among those who are already supportive of the EU.

Gallup conducted the poll in order to weigh the political mood of the public towards the European parliamentary elections of 5 June.
The survey was conducted in May 2013 and at least 750 people from each country presented their views.
