True or false: Sweden is a very successful exporting country

Tuesday, 04 December 2012
It has always been said that Sweden is a success story in many areas - education, exports, social and welfare system, healthcare and the like. Some have been found to be the case and others have been found to be flat.

Recently, it was a common wisdom to hold Sweden as the leader in international exports and that Sweden was an export successful country - but it turns out that this particular aspect has been coined "exaggeration".

The organization, Svenskt Näringsliv (SN)  or the Confederation of Swedish Enterprise has produced a report, which show holes in the notion that Sweden is one of the world's most successful exporting countries.

The confederation writes that "it's almost a mantra that Sweden is a "small export-dependent country," and that it is Sweden's strong exports that has laid the foundation for the Swedish economy."

Even as Trade minister, Ewa Björling has set a target of Swedish exports to double by 2015 and that this will create half a million new jobs, she knows that it is a tall order for the question has arisen that does Sweden has what it takes to search and build international markets. Other questions run as how does Sweden's exports compared to other countries? Has the Swedish companies managed to defend its market share in recent years? And are the industry reforms being implemented by the government sufficient for exports to be able to double?  These questions are to be discussed in a seminar on 5 Dec.

But based on media reports, compared with the size of the its gross domestic product (GDP) Sweden is classified as 17th  exporting nation in Europe and 59 globally, writes the confederation's economist Björn Lindgren in an article published in the Swedish business daily, Dagens Industri.

Dagens Industri writes that the challenges for Swedish exports is greater than has been recognized. Unlike what many economists and politicians tend to emphasize, Sweden is far from one of the world's most successful exporting countries.
Among EU countries, exports was on average 64 percent of GDP last year, but for Sweden it was just 50 percent..

So according to the confederation, Swedish exports is not as strong as people are made to think.

This network in several articles last year had written about the skewed view of the way Sweden does international business. In one write-up, we pointed that Sweden had focused on the sales of military hardware instead of broadening its market for real goods. We pointed out that the believe the Swedes had that hey were better  at negotiating and opening new markets rather than using their current diverse population which non Swedish looking people are shot out of the job market will hurt the economy.

Now it has tended that not much of Sweden is sold abroad and Swedish companies would not promote themselves with an international facing business portal like Scandinavian companies and market. With increasing competition, it will be nice to see how they will achieve their goals of increased exports.
