Swedish defence likely to buy 60 new fighter jets making it the biggest military deal in modern times

Thursday, 17 January 2013
One of the largest defence business is what has been described the Swedish government's intention to provide its Armed Forces with  60 new fighter jets of the type JAS Gripen 39 E,  and also that called super-JAS from Saab.

The new defence deal, which Swedish television says they have seen evidence of it being made has been supported by statements from the Swedish Supreme Commander,  Sverker Goranson, which he said that Sweden would be making a security risk if the political system fails to invest in fewer than 60 new fighter aircraft of the model JAS 39 E.

The decision however, relies on the success of the deal with Switzerland who has earlier shown interest in buying the Swedish Jas Gripen jets or any other country to that places an orders for the fighter jets.

The expectation is that the new aircraft will be delivered from 2018 but the public is not allowed to know how much they'll cost, yet.

Parliament gave the green light in December for the government to purchase between 40-60 planes. Now the government has decided that there should be 60 planes bought, making the acquisition one of the largest defence businesses in Sweden in modern times.

"We think it is good that the Armed Forces are now ordering these 60 new JAS Gripen. It will also secure the future of Swedish fighter capability by the year 2042," says Defence Minister, Karin Enstrom to Sweden television.
