Swedish Parliament gives the go-ahead for the government to buy new JAS Gripen

Tuesday, 11 December 2012
The Swedish air force will soon be equipped with latest fighter jets from the SAAB jet production line as the parliament on Tuesday gave the government the green light to order between 40 and 60 JAS Gripen fighters of the new E version.

The total cost, including maintenance and operations, is expected to be Skr90 billion up to 2042. The Green Party and the Left party had reservations about the decision in a voting that stood at 264 against to 19, while 18 abstained.

The decision means that fighter planes are to be cancelled by 2014 if not Switzerland or any other country decided to buy at least 20 new JAS Gripen aircraft.

The decision leaves room for the government to cancel the order by 2014 if either Switzerland or another country does not purchase at least 20 new planes by then.
