Swedish PM Seeks Lower Expenses, for an EU Budget that is modern and meet needs

Thursday, 22 November 2012

Swedish premier would be interested in seeing a reduced EU spreading at this time of curtailed spending in member countries of the region. To attain that there is the need to design a more modern budget that focused more on areas of future core interest.

This was the view of the Swedish Prime Minister, Fredrik Reinfeldt (pictured below) on Thursday as he participate in the EU budget talk in Brussels
"We think the overall expenses levels are too high, we think they should come down," Fredrik Reinfeldt said ahead of a meeting with other EU leaders to try and reach an agreement on the bloc's budget between 2014 and 2020.

"Too many resources are directed to what Europe was and not to what Europe should become," he said.

EU leaders are beginning talks on the bloc's seven-year budget, with many of them calling for cuts in line with the savings they are making nationally.

Countries that rely heavily on EU funding, including Poland and its ex-communist neighbours, want current spending levels maintained or raised.

The EU's Commission has called for an increase of 4.8%. EU leaders will try to reach consensus on their own figure.
