Sweden's first ever-black minister Sabun Leave her post in the government

Monday, 21 January 2013
Sweden's first ever black (African) Minister, Nyamko Sabuni of the Swedish People's Party, has decided to finally leave the government. The Gender and Equality Minister and former Deputy Minister of Education has left the government at his own request, according to a press release. She also leaves his seat in parliament.

"I have long decided not to run for parliamentary elections in 2014, and have therefore come to the conclusion that I should give my successor time to get into the job in good time before the election, "she writes.

"I am very grateful for all the support I have received from so many over the years as a minister. I am grateful for the confidence to be a minister first Lars Leijonborg and then Jan Björklund have shown me," Sabuni writes in a comment.

"I am particularly proud of reforms we have established, a coherent anti-discrimination legislation, combating violence against women, and the fight against honour crimes."

The leader of the People's party, Jan Björklund regrets that Sabuni will not be standing for election in 2014.
"Ms Sabuni has been a fearless politician who dared to speak her heart, especially in the often controversial integration issues. She has made a clear impact on the integration and equality policy in Sweden, "he said in a statement.

Sabuni has previously said that she would leave politics at the next election, regardless of election results. Twelve years in politics will suffice, said Sabuni to Chef Newspaper, already last year.

"It's time to do something else. Perhaps in business or studies," said Sabuni earlier to the paper.

Nyamko Sabuni is the fourth government minister to leave the government during their term. Already, Sten Tolgfors of Defence (Moderates), Andreas Carlgren (Centre party) Environment Minister, and Enterprise and Energy minister, Maud Olofsson (Centre party) left.

Nyamko Sabuni press secretary Yoav Bartal would not provide any additional comments before the press conference with Sabuni and Bjorklund at 9am today.
