Sweden's Christian-Democrat top politician feels that Sweden should join NATO
Wednesday, 05 June 2013
Christian Democrat defense policy spokesperson, Mikael Oscarsson want Sweden to become a member of NATO.
"We think that we should no longer get a free ride from NATO. We feel
that we are already members. It would contribute to increased security
both for our country and our neighbouring countries," he says to radio
Sweden in reaction to the parliamentary defence committee debate.
This spring, Swedish defense capability was discussed frequently, after
the defence Chief's announcement that Sweden is able to defend an area
for a week and then need would need outside help keep around the clock
defence need.
This comes after the Russia military was practicing with Swedish
targets within or very close to Swedish territorial integrity and
Swedish military remain asleep.
In one occasion it was the Danish air force under the auspice of NATO that was scrabbled to assist.
NATO Secretary General had given notice that it's only member countries
that can count on NATO support in case of a military crisis. And this
ties with the argument put forward by the Christian Democratic
politicians.
"We can not expect the same protection if we are not members," says Mikael Oscarsson.
Neither party leader, Göran Hägglund or party secretary Acko Ankarberg Johansson were available for comment about the proposal.
According to latest opinion polls conducted in May, 29 percent of
Swedish people support Sweden becoming a member of NATO unlike 32
percent who are against. 39 percent, a very strong swing section are
undecided.
