Sweden cancels economic aid to Uganda after fraud is uncovered

Thursday, 25 October 2012
Sweden will stop all economic aid to Uganda as evidence emerge that money donated to the country for economic development goes into private pockets.

Money would have gone to be used in building up the poor war ravaged northern parts of the country but that money is suspected to have ended up in private pockets. Skr15 million of the missing money is contribution made by Sweden.

This comes after Uganda's own National Audit department, discovered that half of the money in a fund of Skr200 million seems to have gone for something completely different from what was intended. The economic assistance funds were expected to have been used to build schools, roads, and health clinics in the impoverished and war-torn north of the country. But that turned out not to be the case as unscrupulous official as transferred the funds into their personal accounts.

The money in the aid fund has been donated by Ireland, the UK, Norway, Denmark, and Sweden. According to the report, Skr15 million of the misappropriated money was Swedish.

Having taken note of the report from the Ugandan auditor general, Sweden has decided to stop its contribution to the economic aid for the country until further notice.

According to Gunilla Carlsson, Swedish economic aid Minister, based on the report they have, the Ugandan government officials and perhaps even politicians are involved. She praised the Ugandan National Audit Office for identifying and reporting the corruption.
