Increased support for Sweden's NATO membership

Thursday, 16 May 2013
Support for a Swedish accession to NATO has risen, but still a majority of Swedes stand against membership in the alliance.
According to a new survey conducted by polling organisation, Sifo for the Swedish daily Svenska dagbladet, 32 percent of respondents want to see a membership compared with 23 percent in 2011.

40 percent say no to Sweden's NATO membership compared to 50 percent in 2011.
"NATO supporters appear to have advanced their positions" says Ulf Bjereld, professor of political science.

One driver for this is has been tied to the slumber Swedish military took when Russian forces trained within Swedish territorial region and Sweden could not react.

Instead, NATO forces led by the Danes could scramble to do Sweden's own job. The matter led to a heated debate about Sweden military preparedness to defend it territorial integrity but still some people feel that Sweden remains safe outside the Union.
