Freedom and democracy? What freedom when the police is listening to all our conversations
Friday, 22 June 2012
The number of people in Sweden who are whose telephone conversations
are secretly intercepted and monitored by the police is on the
increase. Last year it was 17 percent higher than a year earlier,
according to a report by the Swedish Police and Swedish Prosecution
Authority.
One reason attributed is said to be that serious organized crime is on
the increase in Sweden and Gunnar Appelgren, detective chief inspector
who led the effort against the high-profile Södertälje Network, says
that those in the intervention had great use of secret surveillance.
“If we start for example with telephone interception then we have good
conversations used as evidence to support the story as a victim and the
plaintiffs have said, so we believe we have benefited greatly from it,”
he said to radio Sweden.
The room eavesdropping gave good evidence in the operation against the
Södertälje network in which 17 people, accused of various crimes
including three murders,” says Chief Inspector Gunnar Appelgren.
Also persons in Sweden who were suspected police for suspected drug
offenses saw their telephone and rooms bugged as well as monitored by
video surveillance approaches
According to the report from the Swedish Police and the prosecution,
2040 people were last year secretly monitored in connection with a
suspected crime. The year before, more than 1 700 people - an increase
in words, but not remarkable, according Göran Hellstrand, deputy chief
prosecutor at the development centre in Malmo.
The report assesses the prosecutors that the covert surveillance was of
use to the investigation regarding some 70 percent of cases.
But in order to use the required approach for surveillance, the court
must first grants permission. Moreover, it is costly for the police,
but worth it, believes Commissioner Gunnar Appelgren. This has to do
with the equipment and various legal costs.
So there is freedom but only the bad guys are being sort after. We however know that we are being watched after all.
