Finland summons Israeli ambassador

Wednesday, 05 December 2012
The Finnish Foreign Ministry has summoned the Israeli ambassador to express concern over Israel's plans to expand its settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

Finnish national broadcaster, Yle, reports that the ministry's top official, state secretary Pertti Torstila, told Ambassador Dan Ashbel that Finland is disappointed by the decision. He stressed that it violates international law and presents a clear obstacle to Middle East peace.
This follows the action of several EU countries that have also summoned their Israeli ambassadors or otherwise condemned Israel’s decision. Sweden summoned its Israeli Ambassador on Monday and condemned the Israeli action.

Last week, Finland join the United Nations General Assembly in a vote that gave the Palestinian state a stronger status in the international body.
