Finland barred from buying weapons by the U.S.

Finland may not be allowed to purchase missiles from the United States, the U.S. Congress recently determined and decided according to media reports in Finland.

On Wednesday, the paper, Helsingin Sanomat reports that it was nit clear why Finland was barred from buying US arms stressing that it is rare that such a thing has happened. The United States had already in early June approved to sell more than 70 missiles to Finland.

The robot missile system has the designation M39 Block 1A missile system and is part of the MGM-140 Army Tactical Missile System (ATacMS) with a range of 200-300 kilometers.

The manufacturer Lockheed Martin received the green light to sell a total of 70 missiles, as late as June. The deal is worth the equivalent of about Skr860 million.

Every arms deal made in the USA must be approved by the U.S. Congress. Normally this is seen as a formality.

it is suspected that the deal cancellation could be a tactical American games to appease Russia's dissatisfaction with what Russia perceives as NATO's military armament of its east.

As recently as a few weeks ago President Vladimir Putin, in talks with Finnish President, Niinistö, said that he disliked "Finland's rearmament under NATO auspices."

Finland intends to submit a new application this fall.
