Denmark, a very active member of NATO asks: Are we going to war in Syria?

Monday, 13 May 2013
Turkey, a NATO member may attack Syria and thus indirectly draws Denmark - into Syria's civil war. Then the Danes are asking whether they are going to war in Syria?

Turkey may get sucked into the conflict in Syria and thus forcing the international community in the form of NATO to intervene.

That opportunity arose after 46 people on Saturday were killed by a car bombs in a Turkish border town close to Syria. The Syrian government denies being behind, but Turkey maintains defiant that the attack is related to the Assad regime in Syria.

"Turkey is a NATO member and has shown that the attack is Syria-related. If that is the case, it is indeed a direct attack on a NATO member. So Turkey has the opportunity to contact NATO and thus staircase the conflict up," says Turkey expert Daniella Kuzmanovic from the University of Copenhagen to radio Denmark P1 morning channel.

NATO is obliged to intervene if one of the alliance's member states is being attacked and asking for help. That Turkey has not done yet, and there is a possibility that Turkey chose to respond on their own without the NATO, according to the assessment of Daniella Kuzmanovic, adding that "I am absolutely convinced that at some point will come a retaliatory attack."

However, the matter will be discussed between the Turkish Prime Minister,  Erdogan and U.S. President Obama in Washington on Thursday reports radio Denmark.
