Danish Municipalities invest in corrupt countries but minister hit hard at them

Sunday, 03 June 2012
Danish municipalities have been accused of investing their money in corrupt regimes. Horsens, Skanderborg and Randers are among 11 Danish municipalities that invest in non-democratic countries in Africa.

Municipalities through mutual funds bought bonds in countries that both have big problems with corruption and are fully or partially unfree, writes various Danish media sources.
Horsens and Skanderborg bought government bonds from Senegal and Nigeria, while Randers has invested in Gabon and Ivory Coast.

The total for the three eastern Danish municipalities are only Dkr48,000, but still the Economy Minister, Margaret Vestager sent a letter to the municipalities, asking them to drop that kind of investment.

The radical minister told the newspaper that politicians must take responsibility for ensuring that taxpayers' money is not going to work as a loan to countries that have problems with human rights.
