Corruption investigation in South Africa related to the sale of Saab fighter jet, Gripen, collapse

Monday, 11 March 2013
Impending corruption inquiry in South Africa on issues related to the sale of the fighter jet,  Saab Gripen aircraft looks as if it has collapsed, and it looks as if that collapse if driven by political forces.

According to reports in Swedish media sources, citing the south African news paper, The Times, South Africa, the process of the investigation and inquiry has taken so long that several members of the so-called Seriti Commission has retired or are about to retire.

According to reports, one of those who resigned accused the President and the trial judge Willie Seriti of political agenda. The reason is said to be that the Commission has apparently decided to free the ruling party ANC and its leaders, who are believed to have benefited the most from arms deals, the newspaper said.

To add more to the frustration of the investigators, no party officials is said to have been questioned or examined.

Despite all suspicions, Seriti said that the Commission has proof of ANC involvement in the issue.
Saab has been accused of paying Skr24 million to an adviser to the South African defence minister through its British partner BAE systems.
