Where are the jobs? – Sweden

Friday, 29 June 2012
Sweden has about 8.1 percent unemployment at this moment but the economy is crying out for mining engineers, programmers and surgical nurses. These are some of the sectors where there is a strong demand for skills, but on the flipside, sailors, photographers and stock brokers, for example have a bleak future in Swedish job market today.

The Swedish employment service's forecast for the next twelve months shows that people with a technically oriented college education are the most requested on the Swedish labour market.

This applies to background such as IT occupations such as programmers and manufacturing jobs such as mining and construction engineers.

"Education is the key. It has been this long, but the trend now appears to be getting stronger, "says Håkan Gustavsson, an analyst at the Swedish Employment Service.

The trend towards ever greater demand for people with specialized skills continues to grow not only in private but also in the public sector.

A sick nurse who choose to continue their education to the surgical nurse, for example, expect to be much more in demand when specialized training is completed.
"Just as in the manufacturing industry, there is simply a lack of qualified personnel in the health sector. This also applies to physicians. This is because fewer people are trained, "says Håkan Gustavsson.

Not mentioned here is the huge amount to skill emigrating to other neighbouring countries as well as the wider EU. This applies mostly to kills made up of people of the minority who are either subbed in the Swedish job market but are accepted elsewhere or those who feel that the cost of living such as the lack of housing and related constrict on their ability to employ their skills in Sweden.

This could partly explain why technology companies and parts of the health sector are crying out for highly skilled personnel, though there is are still many skills of surplus of supply.
This applies to skills such as journalists, photographers and a sailor where getting a job in Sweden is as hard as trying to get the excrement of a snake.

A relatively new acquaintance on the list of occupations with the worst prospects is that of securities dealers and stock broker. Traditionally restaurant assistant and secretaries are deeply rooted in the no go areas for job seekers.

For stock traders and security dealers, their job pool is shrinking because the financial industry is reducing personnel from the once successful brokerage engines.
"Some of the excess is due to structural changes in various economic sectors. Some occupations are also relatively small in terms of number of employees, which can make individual changes have a major impact on statistics, "says Håkan Gustavsson.

The Swedish Employment Service predicts that employment on the whole the demand for skills will increase by 5,000 people during the second half of 2012 and then by a further 15,000 people in 2013.

If the forecast is realistic, it would means a sharp slowdown in growth rate compared to 2011, when the number of employed increased by 93,000 persons.
The list is that which show the occupations that are in short supply and those that are over supplied.
