Weak June for Swedish retail trade -cloths hardly hit but rain lift shoe sales

Swedish people are not shopping as required and clothing sector has been hard hit.
Sales
of cloths went down in June and the first half sales plummeted by as
much as 2.5 percent, according to Svensk Handel Stils Blixtindex
(Svensk Handel style star index).
"We have had two very bad
years in the clothing side, and this semester has unfortunately been no
exception. Given the low comparative figures, I must admit I thought
that June would be better than it was in the clothing side, "said
Mikael Sandstrom, branch chairman of the Swedish Trade Style. on
Tuesday released the Swedish Trade figures for sales of clothing in
specialist stores in June.
The figures show that clothing sales
collapse by 1.5 percent while sales for shoes increase by 2.8 percent.
It means a dismal first half for the garment trade with a decline
of 2.5 percent.
Several large clothing chains are struggling
with declining sales. Kappahl reported a decline of 7.4 percent in its
latest quarter from March to May. RNB which include chains such as JC
and Brothers & Sisters is seeing its sales fall by 9.2 percent
during the same period.
For shoes, it is however better. Half-year figures show an increase of 2.1 percent.
