Weak June for Swedish retail trade -cloths hardly hit but rain lift shoe sales

Tuesday, 10 July 2012
Swedish people  are not shopping as required  and clothing sector has been hard hit.

Sales of cloths went down in June and the first half sales plummeted by as much as 2.5 percent, according to Svensk Handel Stils Blixtindex (Svensk Handel style star index).

"We have had two very bad years in the clothing side, and this semester has unfortunately been no exception. Given the low comparative figures, I must admit I thought that June would be better than it was in the clothing side, "said Mikael Sandstrom, branch chairman of the Swedish Trade Style. on Tuesday released the Swedish Trade figures for sales of clothing in specialist stores in June.

The figures show that clothing sales collapse by 1.5 percent while sales for shoes increase by 2.8 percent. It means a dismal first half for the garment trade with a  decline of 2.5 percent.

Several large clothing chains are struggling with declining sales. Kappahl reported a decline of 7.4 percent in its latest quarter from March to May. RNB which include chains such as JC and Brothers & Sisters is seeing its sales fall by 9.2 percent during the same period.

For shoes, it is however better. Half-year figures show an increase of 2.1 percent.
