Monday, 29 October 2012
Many Swedish and European flights to New York areas are being cancelled as hurricane Sandy strengthened bringing along with it a "life-threatening storm surge", the U.S. National Hurricane Center said early Monday.

7400 national and international flights to and from the area have been cancelled.
50 million people are affected in the seven provinces that issued the standby state of emergency on America's east coast.
New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg calls the city's population to stay indoors during the expected storm. The streets were also remarkably deserted on Sunday night, which is a rarity in the city that is said to never sleep.

Maximum sustained winds of about 85 miles per hour (140 km per hour) were recorded as the storm lumbered toward the densely populated East Coast, leaving millions of residents with only hours to prepare for its onslaught as forecasters warned that a wall of water up to 11 feet high could hit New York City, report MSNBC

In London aril ports, thousand of travellers became stranded as the flights specifically to the affected regions were cancelled.

The New York Stock Exchange will be completely closed on Monday and possibly on Tuesday, said the owner of the stock exchange, NYSE Euronext. Previously, the owner stated that electronic commerce would be open while the rest would be closed. Reason for the closure was stated as concern for the safety of personnel associated with Hurricane Sandy.
