Swedish Unemployment falls but the future looks weak

The Swedish unemployment rate was 4.3 percent of the workforce in April, compared with 4.5 percent the previous month. This relates to people who are at work.

In April 2011, unemployment was 4.3 percent reports from the Swedish employment agency national Employment Service, (Arbetsförmedlingen) AF, showed in its monthly job reports.
The number of registered unemployed at the end of April, was 384 000, an increase of nearly 14,000 over the same month last year.

Including the number of people at working age with activity support, the unemployment rate was 8.2 percent of the labour force in April.
The employment Service writes that the labour market continued to weaken in April. The total number of registered unemployed increased and both the number of vacancies and the number of people who have started some kind of work were reduced.

"Of those who were registered at the Employment Service in April, the 48 000 individuals started some kind of work. We have noticed that the demand for labour continues to fall and that the number of vacancies reported to the national employment offices decreased compared with April of last year,” says Clas Olsson, Employment Service's chief analyst, in a statement.
The number of candidates in programs with activity financial support amounted to 4.0 percent of the workforce, or 185 000 people, 9000 more compared to same month last year.
More than 79 000 people had various forms of subsidized employment, an increase of almost 3,000 individuals from the same month last year.

The number of notices amounted to 3,700, up 200 from the same month last year. The total number of vacancies was 60,000, which was 2000 less than the same month last year.
Among youths between 18 and 24 years 88 000 were registered unemployed in April, an increase of 6,000 persons from the same month the previous year.
