How Sandy is drowning the American east coast

Tuesday, 30 October 2012
Monster storm Sandy, one of the worst to hit the U.S., is drowning much of the East Coast on Tuesday night Swedish time. Over three million households were without electricity and cars are floated in the water masses in Manhattan.

According to the business news site, Business Insider, Hurricane Sandy has resulted in an extraordinary amount of flooding in Manhattan (particularly lower Manhattan) as storm surges have broken all kinds of records.

As of the middle of the night on Monday, the water has receded a bit. For example, the Battery area now has no water, after having well more than a foot of water earlier. But the city is far from out of the woods, as another high tide is coming on Tuesday morning.

The storm raked in over land in southern New Jersey early Monday evening local time. The storm was classified as no longer a hurricane, although it still pulled out with hurricane force. The wind speed had slowed to around 36 meters per second, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center.
