Searching for their own European Dream - Greek and Spanish job seekers start emigrating in search for work

Monday, 10 September 2012
As the crisis in their countries continues to persist, a stream of educated Greeks are flowing to Germany and Spaniards have begun to unpack their suitcases in search of jobs according to jobs site, CareerBuilder, one of the largest job site on the internet.

"Europeans must be prepared to be more mobile if they are to get a job," company CEO Tony Roy told the Swedish business daily Dagens Industry during a visit to a job fair at the Globe in Stockholm, Sweden that he is involved in organizing.

Greece has an unemployment rate of 24 percent, or 1.2 million people, the highest among the EU countries. The country is in its fifth year of recession, and since 2008 the number of unemployed has tripled. Then German employers - especially in the public sector look to get the chance to get make use of these well educated.

"We'll have a job fair in Greece soon where several German health care companies want to recruit doctors and nurses, "said Tony Roy.
However, compared to the Greeks, the Spaniards are in a slightly better position, according to Tony Roy. The reason is that Spain has a number of global companies, such as Telecoms Company, Telefonica and clothing giant, Inditex, which is growing overseas. In Greece, there are fewer options, and there are language skills in addition to Greek which is a massive barrier.

The Swedes and other northern Europeans should equip themselves to shelter themselves fro the effects of unemployed.

"When the job market is tough, one need to diversify the strategy itself in search of jobs. one can not just rely on what operate in an industry, but must be prepared to at least broaden up. Have you worked as a salesperson in the telecom sector, be prepared to be able to sell any in other fields, "said Tony Roy.

Job seekers should also be prepared to move to where the jobs are. Recently CareerBuilder bought one job search site specializing in ads where employers are looking for multilingual candidates. Among the nearly 400,000 registered job seekers, there was a reported high rate that they were willing to move to other cities or countries if required to get a particular job.
