Despite high youth unemployment in Sweden, there are jobs that the young will not touch

Sunday, 02 September 2012
Despite high youth unemployment in Sweden, there are jobs that young people in Swedish are not interested in, according to some authorities.

One of the area pointed by Swedish television where youths are reported not seeking to take a jobs is in the area of manufacturing. This is a form of production such as working in the foundry. In one such production centre on the border between Småland and Halland, the management there say that they find it hard to get labour.

These is labour that don't need any form of education, according to Eva-May Hansson, human resources manager of one of the companies to Swedish television. The education that is gained there is on the job training.

17 percent of young people in the municipality are unemployed, according to the Employment Service in Halmstad, which is six miles away from Unnaryd, where the foundry is located.

70 of 150 employees in the company, was born outside Sweden.  The Swedish-born youths sent to the foundry by the Swedish employment authority, Arbetsförmedlingen  to apply for jobs there are seldom really interested.  The worker here come from places such as  Poland, Vietnam, Kosovo among others.

But it is not very clear whether these jobs are properly advertised targeting the Swedish youths or whether the employers are just interested in foreign labour whom they believe will take them loss time to train.

Some critics say that companies can come out now and say that youths are not interested in these types of jobs. But it is a known fact that since the Swedish labour market was open for foreign labour, many companies have taken the shorter route and recruited extensively from where they could get cheaper labour while the youths in the country have not be encouraged to get engaged.
