Thursday, 11 July 2013
Danish stores have joined Norway to start rejecting cash and opting for
card payment instead. In Sweden, though both cash and card are still
accepted.
For stores in Denmark, it is obliged to accept cash as payment. But
they more are refusing to accept cash claiming that cash is expensive
to handle and increases the risk of fraud and robbery, writes the
Danish daily, Politiken. More and more business people, according to
the newspaper are beginning to follow the act. An example is the food
chain Cofoco as from 1 July only accepts credit/debit cards in his four
Le Marché restaurants with and also with take always.
In Denmark, the cost per cash payment now is averaging Dkr7.36,
compared with Dkr3.15 million when the payment is made electronically.
According to Denmark's central bank, the social cost of cash management
was Dkr5.8 billion in 2009.
In an email to Politiken writes National Bank for the first time that it is willing to discuss an amendment
