Cold snap forced increased in cloths and footwear sales in Sweden

Clothes Retail sales in Sweden rose 0.6 percent in February, measured in current prices of identical units, compared to same month the year before. Shoe stores increased sales simultaneously by 13.6 percent.

Official data from the Swedish Trade style (Shoe & Textile dealers) flash index of sales development show blamed on the resurgent of the cold weather against perception that the winter would be warmer.

Accumulated over the period January-February clothing sales fell 3.0 percent compared to same period last year, while the shoe trade grew by 8.9 percent.

Mikael Sandström, branch chairman of the Swedish Trade Style, commented that the clothing business showed a small plus for the first time since April 2011, while shoe sales have had a big increase, although comparison with past months was strong. A calendar effect by leap day also helped.

"A combination of very sales even for severe winter shoes and boots and a big cold months drove shoe sales up"said Mikael Sandstrom, adding that even the clothing sales were not vey bad.
