Christmas retail sales in Sweden disappoints

Tuesday, 29 January 2013
For the first time in 17 years Christmas sales in Sweden produced reached a disappointing side of the analysis as fewer shopping days and autumn mass job losses took the air out of Buying spree.

Evidence that the fall in retail sales has to do with financial worried is clearly shown
when compared with sales in second hand retail products which saw a better sales than before.

Swedish retail sales in December fell by 0.4 percent compared with the same month in 2011, measured in current prices, according to figures from Statistics Sweden and the HUI Research, which carries out the investigations on retail sales for that period.

However, retail trade sales volume increased by 2.5 percent in December compared to the same month last year. Retail sales for consumables increased by 2.6 percent while retail sales for durables increased by 2.6 percent. The information is working day adjusted.

According to HUI Research, the poor development is partly explained by a calendar effect, since December had a Thursday and Friday (two of the most important sales days) less compared to December last year. Adjusted for the calendar effect, sales increased by 2.1 percent in current prices. Also retail trade is following the pattern of diminishing consumer confidence and is drawn down by the weak economy.
