Swedish government's efforts against corruption criticized

Thursday, 21 February 2013
The Swedish government has been criticised by the country's National Audit office  for lack of an overview of the work against corruption.

"The government does not have a comprehensive picture of how agencies working to prevent corruption. This is remarkable given that several authorities have detected corruption cases in recent years, "writes Auditor Jan Landahl in the Swedish daily, Dagens Nyehter.

He exemplifies the high-profile cases in the Probation Service, Immigration Service and the National Insurance.

According to a press release from the National Audit Office, the government should consider setting clear requirements for all government agencies to assess the risks of corruption. A quarter of authorities do not do this today, according to the audit review of the 65 largest authorities in the country.

Among other things, there should be procedures for how staff can report suspicions corruption activities.
The authorities underestimate the risk and believe that corruption can not occur in them.
"Almost all agencies have guidelines, but these are usually general and not tailored to the business," writes the National Audit Office in the press release
