Swedish women lead survival rates in cancer care a new study show

Friday, 01 March 2013
Swedish women who suffer from cancer have been reported to register a high rate of survival in Sweden, a new study show.

Despite complains in Sweden about their own healthcare systems especially in relations to access, waiting time and length of stay, many of the women in Sweden suffering from breast cancer in Sweden survive compared to some other countries such as the UK, which brags of its iconic NHS.

Close to 19 of the 20 women in Sweden suffering from breast cancer live three years after their diagnosis. It is much more than for example in Denmark and the UK.

Study provides no conclusive answer as to why Sweden is at the top, but this calls for further investigation.

However, the study, which involved Australia, Denmark, Canada, Norway, Sweden and the UK, and published
online in the scientific journal, the British Journal of Cancer, show that of these countries, only Denmark has not introduced a general mammography for early detection of breast cancer.

"The poorer survival in Denmark seems largely explained by the fact that breast cancer is often detected at a more advanced stag, difficult healed stage than in other countries. In Britain, however, the survival rate for all stages of breast cancer is lower than in Sweden," said Fredrik Wärnberg, chief physician at University Hospital surgical clinic (Akademiska sjukhusets kirurgklinik ) and one of the researchers behind the study to the site, unt.se

Scientists have scrutinized data from the cancer registries of almost 260 000 women with breast cancer, of which more than 20 000 of them came from Uppsala-Örebro and Stockholm-Gotland healthcare regions in Sweden.
