Monday, 23 January 2012
Even a small amount of alcohol can trigger a miscarriage, according to a Danish study.
In a result which has surprised scientists, two schnapps a week
increases the risk of miscarriage by 50 percent. Four schnapps doubles
that, writes the Danish science website Videnskab.dk.
started the study I just wanted to show the opposite, that you can
drink a little alcohol during pregnancy. That's what we expected to
find, because the result is surprising,” says the professor of social
epidemiology at the University of Copenhagen, Anne-Marie Nybo Andersen.
Over 90,000 pregnant women were included in the study. To date, there
has been much debated whether a small amounts of alcohol during
pregnancy is harmful. Previous studies have given different results,
but given the new results from this very large study, Anne-Marie Nybo
Andersen did not give any other recommendation than complete abstinence
from alcohol for at least the first four months of pregnancy.
The Danish authorities over seeing alcohol related consumption called for a small, one shot a day and that it be taken slowly.
