Poor Danish men's sperms quality linked to food type but junk food, alcohol and cigarette binge not ruled out totally - research show

Monday, 07 January 2013
The story that Danish men have the audacity to produce poor quality sperm is not and news story. It is comfortably narrated today that the quality of sperm produced by Danish men is not what it used to be.

In the past, various theories have been propounded to try to advance some understanding as to why such phenomenon persisted within the Danish guys. However, there seems to have emerged strong scientific evidence  which could throw some understanding as to the reason behind this Danish men production of 'lazy or disorientated swimmers.'

According to a new study from a group of Danish researchers based at the Rigshospitalet - Copenhagen University Hospital, or simply Riget, which has just been published on Monday, the cause is tied to a substances called saturated fatty acids. This fatty acid as it name indicated come from food - food that contain sad fatty acids.

A test was done on 701 young men who were asked for their diet menu for three months, and the conclusion was clear, according to leader researchers, Professor Tina Kold Jensen of Rigshospitalet's Department for growth and reproduction.

"The men who ate the most saturated fat, have a significantly lower sperm quality than those who ate the least," she said. In fact, a quarter of the men in the study who ate the most saturated fat, had a sperm count that is 30 percent lower than the group that ate the least saturated fat in the trial.

"The results have surprised me a lot. Previously we have looked at smoking and endocrine disrupters as the main factors, "said Tina Kold Jensen.

"We have of course taken into account other aspects of men's lives such as smoking, weight, and amount of exercise they did. Nevertheless, of course we cannot exclude 100 percent that semen quality has nothing to do with the whole lifestyle around what they eat, such as unhealthy foods, with much saturated fat, "says Tina Kold Jensen.
The study is published in the journal, American Journal of Clincal Nutrition.
