Antidepressants increase among young in Sweden

Friday, 13 July 2012
Stress, boredom and uncertainty in their futures means that more and more young people in Sweden are being increased anti depressants.

The Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare (Socialstyrelsen) reports an increase of the consumption of anti depressant drugs by 36 percent since 2006, reported Swedish television.

The use of antidepressants is greatest in the age groups 20 and 24 years. More women already take the drugs than men today, but the use among young men is increasing most rapidly.

The increase is because psychiatric care is reported to be better at spotting people with difficulties rather that that the drugs are being given out easily according to Child and Adolescent Psychiatry in Stockholm, Swedish television says.
