A Swedish pill that could be a blessing to the USA?

Friday, 01 February 2013
There is a new Swedish dieting aid, developed at the University of Lund, which could be a diet pill, could become a cure to one of the US biggest ills - obesity.

Appethyl is the name of the product and which is still not yet on the market, but has been developed by Greenleaf Medical AB after comprehensive research at the University of Lund, by a team of researchers led by Professor Charlotte Erlandson Albertsson, report various Swedish media sources.

The product has been shown to suppress appetite in both animal and human studies and is extracted from spinach. The product is said to be launched in the USA and some Asian countries in the second half of 2013.

"I think we can launch Appethyl in Sweden and the rest of Europe in a year. We are conducting clinical studies specifically aimed at European approval, called the EFSA approval," said Anders Struksnes who previously worked with the company Scandinavian Clinical Nutrition, according to Swedish business daily, Dagens Industri.

He believes that Appethyl will succeed because there are hardly any good appetite suppressant products internationally and Appethyl works well in both acute and long-term studies.

Appethyl will be sold as a powder that can be mixed in food, such as fruit juice or yogurt shots and as well as used in pills or capsules. This is why the interest is strong in the USA. Here, the need for people to lose weight is unprecedented, and the market for a successful product is great.

As an indicator of that interest, the Appethyl product is a finalist in the Nutrawards competition, which rewards and recognizes companies that are investing in rigorous and measurable scientific studies to prove the efficacy of their proprietary ingredients, products, or technologies.
