Telia feels that there could be increased in the cost of surfing as more data usage pushes voice application
Wednesday, 18 July 2012
As more people tend to send text, operate, and transfer more data than
talking in the phone, Telia is now targeting that sector for making
money from.
According to the company, all operators need to change their business models, from voice to data - based offerings.
"If you look at mobile phone usage as an example, more than 90 percent
of our traffic in our networks are now data. The challenge is that
voice will be much cheaper and then we have to compensate the revenue
from data," says Telia's CEO Lars Nyberg.
This means that it could be more expensive to surf say people will pay
Skr300 a month to us. Their goal is that customers should continue to
pay Skr300, but the distribution of voice and data will be changed.
Voice will be cheaper, and data a bit more expensive, according to
Nyberg.
He also notes a change in behaviour among customers since Telia and other companies started to reduce roaming charges.
"Now data features are surfed when they are travelling. This means that
eventually we will not lose money. Right now, we lose a little bit, but
that's okay. Customers want to be able to surf while in Denmark and
Thailand as they do at home. I think you will be surfing wherever you
are in the world in five years without blinking," said Nyberg.
