TeliaSonera takes allegation of doggy business Uzbekistan serious

Thursday, 20 September 2012
TeliaSonera's CEO takes seriously allegations that TeliaSonera has been accused to be engaged in. CEO Lars Nyberg, responded at a press conference to explain his stance regarding his company business in Uzbekistan.

According to Swedish television's investigative program, which we reported on yesterday, TeliaSonera, has paid billions of Krona to a woman whom is determined to have had strong links with the Uzbek regime. The money was paid in a way that at this moment there is currently no trace of the woman's company accounts.
Nyberg said at the press conference that TeliaSonera's business of Skr2.3 billion with Uzbekistan was an investment, not a bribe.

According to Nyberg the Gibraltar-based company, Takilant was thought to be the rightful owner of the 3G license that TeliaSonera bought, and his firm has not been engaged in money laundering.

However, he also said that he saw the allegations stressful and, therefore, has initiated an external review of the deal to be completed before year-end.

He was also asked if it is common to do business with a one-man company in a tax haven.
"I do not know, we do business with those who have the license."
And when asked why they have not backed off if there were question marks about who had the license,  Lars Nyberg said that there was a balance.
"We are always asking what the value of a business is, we make a balance between the positive and the negative," said Nyberg.
