Statoil has gained 26 licenses in the Gulf of Mexico as it looks to tap into US hail boom
Thursday, 21 June 2012
Statoil has received some 26 licenses in the first licensing round in
the central Gulf of Mexico since the blowout on the Deepwater Horizon
two years ago. The Norwegian state owned Oil Company is increasingly
seeing North America as a strong region to lead its growth in the
company decade since the oil and gas sector is currently booming.
Statoil's winning bids are to be approved by U.S. authorities during
the summer. The company has interests in the award of more than 350
leases in the Gulf of Mexico. Exploration Manager for Statoil in North
America, Erik Finnstrom is satisfied.
“We see North America as a core region for long-term growth. The new
licenses are part of this growth strategy. The strategy is to
participate in exploration projects across the whole range of
possibilities - from those who are in unexplored areas to very mature,
drill ready prospect,” he said.
Statoil is the world's largest offshore operator and leader in subsea
technology. The company is a partner in several major discoveries in
the Gulf of Mexico, including Jack, St. Malo, Julia, Vito and Logan.
The company participates in seven out of eight producing fields that are under development in the Gulf of Mexico.
Right now Statoil is drilling in the Bioko prospect in the central Gulf
of Mexico. Within a year, Statoil will be drilling two or three wells,
and will also participate in two or three wells drilled by other
operators.
