Saab awarded a contract for an airborne surveillance system but the customer must be kept secret

Thursday, 21 March 2013
Swedish military hardware maker, Saab group has signed a contract for the support of airborne surveillance somewhere which remain secretive.

The contract is reported to amounts to Skr 1.1 million for the period 2013 to 2017, according to a statement.
Other than saying that the contract concerns a comprehensive set of spares and support services for a previously delivered system, Saab 2000 AEW&C (Airborne Early Warning & Control), the company could not mention who the customer was.

The Saab 2000 AEW&C comprises of Saab 2000 aircraft equipped with the advanced Erieye radar system and ground equipment.

The wide-area surveillance system in combination with ground equipment enables control over both land and sea, and can play an important role for border surveillance and rescue operations as well as in combating terrorism and organised crime.

This comes after the Nordic countries especially Sweden and Finland have been accused to selling sensitive military equipments of countries where human right violations are very high. Swedish Saab group in particular and Finnish Patria are the leading producers of military hardware in the Nordic region and by not mentioning who the customer is might be interpreted that Saab wants to keep that sector of the business secret.
We have contacted Saab group for reaction and are still waiting for a reply.
