Photo of the Russian punk band, Pussy Riot pulled from IKEA Russia website

Monday, 24 September 2012
Swedish furniture giant, Ikea has removed image of the Russian punk band, pussy riot from its Russian website. The driver of that move is considered to be due to political factors.

The picture, which showed four people in the masks sitting on IKEA furniture, had been posted on a section of the site which displays photographs of customers posing at stores, report CNBC.

The picture showed four people in colourful balaclavas found on the Ikea Russian website. It had been published in a section of the site where clients can show up at different Ikea stores, writes CNBC .

Customers are invited to vote for the best picture. The deleted image, which appears to have been posted by a person in Ekaterinburg, had received 1,431 votes before it was removed - more than any other picture on the site during the same week.

An official of IKEA in Russia confirmed on Sunday the notice had replaced a photograph of people wearing ski masks and declined to comment further immediately, asking for a written request, which would be answered on Monday.

CNBC also added that IKEA has invested about 2.5 billion euros ($3.25 billion) in Russia since 2000, building stores that anchor malls on the outskirts of big cities. Russia was cited as one of a growing lucrative market for Russia contributing massively to that profit growth

Three of the members of the Pussy Riot were sentenced to prison after they completed a Putin-critical performance in a church, and were charged of "hooliganism motivated by religious hatred."
