Only two Swedish companies have signed the agreement on safety in Bangladesh tailoring factory

Saturday, 29 June 2013
So far, 66 international clothing companies have signed the agreement that will improve building and fire safety, as well as strengthening workers' rights for textile workers in Bangladesh. But only two Swedish companies have signed.

The agreement concluded between the companies and the international trade union and civil society organizations has seen only two Swedish companies signing.

Any company that signed the agreement would contribute to a system of inspection and control of the factory premises. This is aimed at improving the life of  textile workers in Bangladesh.

On Tuesday, representatives for clothing company with operations in Bangladesh meet in Geneva. The aim is to clarify ambiguities in the agreement to improve working conditions for Bangladeshi textile workers.

Upwards of 100 Swedish Textile Company are thought to have operations in Bangladesh, but only H & M and Lindex appear to have signed the agreement.

Weak Swedish participation has been blamed on incomplete information according to  Bengt E Johansson, in charge of businesses and Swedish companies operating abroad in the Swedish foreign ministry. According to him, at this moment, companies claim not to be clear what they'll contribute in terms of funding.

Swedish companies are still urged to sign the agreement.
"European companies have generally agreed that we must do something quickly. No one working in the textile industry should have to risk his or her life - in a building collapse or being trapped in a fire. Not everything has to be clear when drifts are designed. In step two, the costs can be allocated accurately."
