Norwegian government gets tough on SAS survival deal

Tuesday, 13 November 2012
The Norwegian government finds itself on the cross road in relations to its SAS business. As public opinion in Norway is that SAS should left to go bust, the government is putting very tough demands on SAS, as the rescue package of the company was being negotiated.

Sweden is the only country out of the three governments that own SAS that initially wanted to do all to make the airliner to remain in the air. Denmark and Norway wanted the loss making venture to be let loose. That is why when the company came again seeking more money or guarantees for more money, the Norwegian and the Danish governments did not find that interesting. But Norway couls shout now more than Denmark given their different economic position.

According to the Norwegian business daily, Dagens Näringsliv and the tabloid, VG after interactions with various individuals with insight into the negotiations, the result is that the Swedish and Danish states were more willing than the Norwegians to help SAS through the crisis.

Denmark had a change of heart this time because Denmark and Sweden have higher unemployment at the moment than Norway. Also these two countries have more nationals employed by SAS, according to reports.

The Norwegian, Danish, and Swedish states together own half of SAS. Norway on its part would throw it weight on its own national champion, Norwegian which is performing better and a real better competitor to SAS.
