Nokia Siemens Networks cutting over 600 jobs in Finland as Nokia also cuts 1000 jobs
Thursday, 22 March 2012
Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) is to axe no more than 624 jobs from its operations in Finland, the company said on Thursday.
Before the start of talks with union representatives in January, the
data networking and telecommunications equipment company had estimated
it would need to eliminate up to 1,200 employees in Finland from its
payroll.
NSN confirmed that negotiations with employees that ended on Wednesday will result in cuts of just above 600 jobs.
Reports from Finland hold that over half of those to be affected in the
NSN job cuts are those employed in Espoo, where the company is
headquartered. Over 100 jobs in Tampere and more than 70 in Oulu are to
be eliminated. In addition, another 80 will be cut at various regional
units.
Other report says that Nokia, proper, will reduce the number of its
employees in Salo, Finland, with up to 1,000 jobs. The cutbacks will
occur gradually over the year. In early February Nokia announced that
it would move production of smartphones from three plants (Komarom in
Hungary, Reynosa, Mexico, and Salo, Finland) to Asia. At the three
sites approximately 4,000 employees were to be affected, said Nokia in
February.
