Horse meat in Sweden: Dafgård tracks the source of horse meat supplies

Tuesday, 05 March 2013
The company, Dafgård, which supply most cooked meat to Swedish retailers, has traced the supplier of its meat and determined that it improperly mixed horsemeat as beef.

This comes from the Polish slaughterhouses where the Swedish company or buyer buys its meat.

The current supplier accounts for a small percentage of incoming raw meat, according Dafgård. The company did not guaranteed Dafgård that it handle other meats such as horse, but when the horsemeat scare erupted recently, with the help of DNA analysis it was determined from evidence that the meat supplier mixed in horsemeat.

Ola Larsson, Marketing director of Dafgård said, according to media reports that, there has been a police report, but would could not name of the supplier. So authorities are still questioning why the company believed that the meat was good quality and did not take time to test it themselves. Where they aware of the mixture and because that meat was chap they stayed quite hoping it will not be discovered?

Some 1000 DNA test was conducted by Dafgård  and reports hold that sampling is continuing and a further twelve products were stopped from being sold in stores on Monday.

Authorities insist that there are no health hazard in eating such meat but for precautionary reasons, samples are taken and those deemed contaminated are stopped from sales.
Dafgård became engulfed into the horse meat scandal a week ago when horsemeat  was found in meatballs they made for Ikea. Many other Swedish retailers dealing with cooked food also tested positive for horsemeat.

Initially consumers were not happy that food was not properly labelled as containing horsemeat and a slight fall in the consumption of cooked frozen food was observed. But now sales in such foods have come back to normal, according to reports.
